The history of Interland is a story of entrepreneurial vision and business-savvy engineering that goes beyond boundaries of never being satisfied with what is, but always seeking a better way. The company has been in the business of web hosting since 1995. When the company needed a hosting technology and none existed,
Interland developed it itself and this goes on to delivering results when its customers presented a challenge.
Interland's service include virtual, shared and managed dedicated accounts, they also provide e-commerce, and application hosting services.
In 1999, Global PC distributor Micron Electronics originally launched its Web hosting strategy by acquiring
HostPro. 2 years later, the company decide to sell its non-hosting businesses to concentrate on the growing hosting market. By August 2002, Micron
Electronics acquired US hosting firm Interland
for $130m in stock, and combined
Interland with subsidiary
Hostpro. The new company rebranded under the Interland
name.
Together, HostPro and Interland
have six data centers, about 130,000 customers, and host more than 230,000 Web sites.
Interland has one data center in Atlanta while HostPro has data centers in Los Angeles; Seattle; and Boise, Idaho. HostPro also plans to consolidate two smaller data centers in Moses Lake, Wash., and Boca Raton, Fla.
Clearly, it was Interland's strategy to continue with a combination of organic growth and acquisitions to help the company either gain size or expand
Interland's technological capabilities. But the story of
Interland wasn't just about money; this company has carved out to be different and successful in the business that has shaped Web usage and Web commerce for millions of consumers and companies. Here is a follow-up look at some of
the acquisitions and accomplishment of the company.
Shortly after the merger of Micron Electronics and Interland
in August 2001, the company acquired the small business-focused shared and dedicated Web hosting assets of AT&T, relating to AT&T Small Business Hosting Service and Business Ready Dedicated Hosting Service in January 2002. Most of the small business accounts it sold to
Interland were said to be in the range of $25 a month to just under $800 a month.
In February 2002, Interland
acquired Kansas City, Mo.-based Web hosting company
CommuniTech.Net, a company that is serving nearly 20,000 small business customers with a strong product offering and outstanding customer service. By May 2002, the web hosting giant
Interland
announced it had purchased Florida-based Dialtone Internet a managed hosting provider with close to 3,000 dedicated and managed servers under its belt.
Despite its success, Interland
is not resting on its laurels, but continues to actively analyzing the market for new opportunities and achieve the targets set for its future progress. To rapidly gain access to the Windows and ASP.NET hosting market,
Interland
announced it had acquired Miami, Florida-based Web hosting company iNNERHOST in September 2002. By December 2002,
Interland
announced it had begun the implementation of its mass-market growth strategy with the acquisition of Trellix Corporation, the leading developer of software-based Web site solutions and
HostCentric, a managed services provider which supports more than 50,000 Websites, for nearly 21,000 customers on over 1,550 servers. The acquisition of the major six hosting providers is part of
Interland's plan to use its cash hoard to grow, scale and increase efficiencies.
More often than not, customers want stable providers with a strong history in the business, an infrastructure that will keep them up and running, and live customer support that takes the worry out of the Web.
Interland
has been responsive to market demand and took great courage using full range of marketing expertise to building successful customer relationships. The company certainly fits into our list of the 100 Most Dynamic Web Hosting Companies 2003.
